Wend

Wend

Offline maps and turn-by-turn navigation for Android.

Wend downloads your country's map by itself and speaks every turn. No ads, no analytics, and the map is OpenStreetMap.

Features

Everything you need on the road

A map that is there without a signal, and a voice that tells you where to turn.

  • Works offline

Wend downloads your country's map by itself, and the detailed vector map when you are on Wi-Fi.

  • Turn-by-turn voice

Spoken directions at every turn, so your eyes stay on the road.

  • 3D map and buildings

Tilt into 3D and the city's buildings stand up from the map.

  • Day and night maps

A bright map for the day and a dark one that is easy on the eyes at night.

  • Hazard reports

Report police, a crash or a traffic jam as you drive.

  • Speedometer and compass

Your speed and your heading, both on the map at a glance.

  • 26 languages

The app comes in 26 languages, Arabic among them, laid out right to left.

  • Phone, tablet and car

One app for phones and tablets, and one for cars that run Android Automotive OS.

Install

Installing the APK

Wend comes as an APK file that you install yourself. It takes about a minute.

  1. Download

On your phone, tap Download for Android. Your browser saves wend.apk.

  2. Allow the install

Open the file from the notification or from Downloads. If Android asks, allow your browser to install unknown apps (on Android 7, turn on Unknown sources in Settings).

  3. Install and open

Tap Install, then Open. Wend asks to use your location, and you are ready to go.

Updates. On a phone or tablet, Wend tells you when a new version is out. Install it over the old one and your places and settings stay.

Cars. The car version is for cars whose own screen runs Android Automotive OS, and installing it needs a car that allows apps from outside its own store. For a new version, install it again from the same link. Android Auto, which shows phone apps on the car's screen, lists only apps installed from Google Play, so it does not show Wend installed from here.

Privacy

Private by default

No account needed: without one, what you save stays on your phone.

  • No ads

There are no ads in Wend, and your data is never sold or shared for advertising.

  • No analytics

The app contains no analytics or crash-reporting software. Without an account, it checks in at most once a week under a random number that says nothing about you, so that Wend can count how many people use it; you can turn that off in Settings.

  • Account optional

An account syncs your saved places and settings. While you are signed in, your position is shared with Wend; signing out stops it.
